Update at 3.30pm: Maldon District Council has confirmed the encampment was successfully moved on by Essex Police colleagues.

An “unauthorised encampment” of several caravans is currently blocking around 20 bays at a town centre car park, Maldon District Council has revealed.

Caravans parked in the spaces, which include 30-minute parking bays, have prompted action from the local authorities.

Officers representing Essex County Council, Maldon District Council, the fire service, and the police visited the site at Butt Lane Car Park today (May 31).

The Essex Countywide Traveller Unit supports Gypsies and Travellers to access services, including schools and further education, health services, and fire safety visits.

They issued the occupants with a “formal notice to leave”, while Essex Police is set to consider taking any further action.

A Maldon District Council spokesperson said: “Please be assured that we are working with our partners, including Essex Police and the Essex Countywide Traveller Unit, to resolve the situation swiftly and respectfully.

“We are committed to ensuring that the car park is fully accessible to our residents and visitors as soon as possible.

“We appreciate your patience and understanding during this time and thank residents for their cooperation.”

Additional parking is still available at other town centre car parks, including High Street East, which has 30-minute free bays.
