CAMPAIGNERS who protested against plans to close St Peter's Hospital are among dozens of citizens who have been celebrated at the Maldon Town Community Awards.

The group, Save Maldon's Medical Services, won the Community Impact Award in recognition of their successful efforts to prevent the closure of the town’s hospital.

Jo Phillips, one of the lead campaigners, was also named Citizen of the Year.

She told Caroline Coastal: "I'm absolutely thrilled that the campaign was able to voice the needs of our community and has been recognised by both residents and Maldon Town Council.

"It was a wonderful awards evening filled with inspirational people all doing their bit to make Maldon the fantastic town it is."

The annual event, held by Maldon Town Council, celebrates individuals and groups making a difference to community life.

This year saw nearly 40 nominations submitted across a range of categories.

Councillor Andrew Lay, Maldon Town Mayor, said: “These often unsung heroes are the foundation of Maldon’s strong spirit.

“The awards offer a well-deserved moment to celebrate their invaluable contributions.”

Other winners included Alfred Knightbridge, President of Maldon Drama Group, who received the Long Service Volunteer Award.

Mr Knightbridge has supported the group for over 70 years and remains an active participant in its productions.

Ella Rose Burgess was named Young Achiever of the Year, for raising funds and awareness for children with cancer while recovering from her own diagnosis.

Also recognised on the night were Educators of the Year Keith Bannister and Kim Callaghan, Town Mayor's Community Service Award winner Brian Farrington and joint winners of the Art, Culture & Heritage Award, Louise Markham and the Maeldune Heritage Centre.
